Rommen’s journey around the world
Rum is a fine spirit with a long history. Its origins can be traced back to the Canary Islands, when Christopher Columbus brought sugar cane seedlings to the island of Hispaniola in the West Indies in 1493. The Caribbean archipelago proved to be ideal for growing sugar cane, marking the beginning of something extraordinary. Sugar production resulted in a large quantity of molasses, and it was soon discovered that a mixture of molasses and water, left to ferment in the sun, produced a potent beverage. This led to the distillation of the remaining material in the 1650s, resulting in an alcoholic beverage. Rum subsequently spread via trading ships and became a beloved drink across the globe.
