For two years, Åland Golf Club rebuilt its seaside 18-hole course Slottsbanan and in the summer of 2020 the completely renovated course opened. The course has also been chosen as one of the courses for a round of the Ladies European Tour, which will be played in the autumn of 2022, so the course will be a championship course.
The club hired Danish course architect Philip Spogárd to develop a new masterplan for the course.
Spogárd realised that the Slottsundet bay should be better utilised, so that the course runs along the water in a more thoughtful way. He planned the course so that the water plays a much bigger role in the game than before.
One example of this is the new holes 9 and 10, which are right next to Slottsundet. There you can - if you dare - hit over the water to shorten the distance to the flag.
Another big change is that you can now see the sea from all 18 holes. There are also many places on the course where you have a fantastic view of the medieval Kastelholm Castle across the bay. After the rebuild, ÅGK really makes 110 per cent use of its unique environment.

Tactics are becoming more important
Only one of the 18 new holes on the Castle Course is on land where there was no golf course before. The other holes have been planned where the old course was, but still the change is huge.
- In some cases, two old holes have been merged to create a new longer hole, and in some cases an old long hole has become two shorter holes. New tees and more undulating greens have been built and tactical opportunities have increased. It is possible to play the same hole in several different ways depending on how good a golfer you are," says Nordström.
Finland's best golf course 2023
In the golf course ranking of Finnish golf courses, Åland Golf Club and Slottsbanan won first place as "Finland's best course" for 2023. The ranking is carried out among about 150 Finnish courses by Golfpiste. Slottsbanan also won the award as category winner in: most beautiful course, best condition and presentation and best design.

Slottsbanan is a park course and was named Finland's best course in 2023. The course runs along the water and is very beautiful. On Slottsbanan you play with the sea as your nearest neighbour and a view of Kastelholm Castle. Slottsbanan hosted the Ladies European Tour in 2022.
Kungsbanan is a forest course that alternates open holes with more tight holes and is a partly hilly course. The course is fun to play as it is very varied.
There is a restaurant on site serving food, sandwiches, snacks and cold drinks. The green fee includes free cart, course guide, access to changing rooms with shower and sauna. Access to range and practice area with putting greens. Parking and possibility to charge electric car. Possibility to rent clubs and golf carts. Golf shop with a wide range of products.

Handicap rules:
- An active membership (golf ID) in a golf club is necessary to play on the Slottsbanan and Kungsbanan. When making a final booking, the name and golf ID of all visitors must be stated.
- To play on the club's short-hole course Prinsessan, a player in the ball must have hcp 36. When booking a game at Prinsessan, the golf ID must be stated for those players who have an active membership of a golf club.
- All guest players with a green card are welcome every day of the week to play on the Slottsbanan and Kungsbanan. At least one player in the ball must have a hcp of 36 or lower and the total hcp of the ball must not exceed 140. See rules for guest play here
