The rich history of port wine
Port wine has its roots in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, where wine has been grown for over 2 000 years. During the 17th century, when England and France were in conflict, port wine came to the rescue of the British who were looking for new wine routes. Adding grape spirit stopped fermentation, preserving the wine's natural sweetness - a taste that quickly became a favourite at the British court. Thus was born the Port we love today, full-bodied, sweet and with a warming character.
