The Åland Maritime Museum has a world-class collection. In addition to incredibly well-built ship models and impressive figureheads, there are also ship environments built around original equipment, furnishings and fixtures. These are brought to life through photographs, stories and activities in the exhibition. Not only adults but also children have fun at the museum. Here you can go on a treasure hunt with Ruby the ship's rat, tie knots, play in the children's room "Ruby and the sea" and much more exciting things. The museum includes a genuine pirate flag that is about 200 years old!
What does a sailor do without a ship? An exhibition on the model of Ponape - a miniature miracle
One of the world's finest and most detailed ship models was built without drawings or tools in a prison camp during World War II by Åland sailor Runar Husell. The special exhibition tells a gripping story about a sailor, a war and the power of creation. The exhibition is on display until autumn 2025 in collaboration with Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö, the Hilda and Gustaf Erikson Foundation and the Gustaf Adolf Erikson Support Fund. Read more
The sailing ship Pommern
Today, the Pommern stands proudly and safely in a custom-built dock next to the Maritime Museum. The ship was built in 1903 in Scotland and after having been owned by various German shipping companies, she was bought in 1923 by the Åland shipowner Gustav Erikson. Under his fleet, the Pommern sailed mainly to Australia where she loaded wheat which was then sold in Europe. The Pommern was in service until 1939 and in 1953 Gustav Erikson's children donated the ship to the city of Mariehamn. Since then, the Pommern has been a museum ship that has been carefully cared for to be preserved for posterity.
The visit to the Pommern includes headphones and a sensor-controlled audio guide where you get to eavesdrop on life on board through various stories. The crew in the audio guide is based on real people. For children, there is a separate audio guide where Ruby the ship's rat tells about life on board and other secrets.
You can visit the Åland Maritime Museum all year round. Pommern is open to visitors during the summer months.
