The Jan Karlsgården Open Air Museum, founded in the 1930s, is set in beautiful surroundings just a stone's throw from Kastelholm Castle. Today there are about twenty buildings here that have been moved to the site from different parts of Åland. The area is divided into the manor house with a farmhouse, a small cottage, a couple's sheds, a loft and a manor house, as well as a sheep farm with stables, a sheep shed, an ox shed and a sheep house. A little further away from the manor house you will find the ria, sauna and smithy as well as windmills.
Since the 1940s, Midsummer has been celebrated at Jan Karlsgården with a traditional pole-raising ceremony. Åland's oldest and largest Christmas market is also organised here every year on Christmas Day, the Saturday before Advent.
The area can be visited all year round but the buildings are only open during the summer months.
