When Mariehamn was founded in 1861, a functioning harbour was needed for the town to develop. The following year, the town was therefore given its own pilot station with a pilot house out on Kobba Klintar, to assist ships arriving in Västerhamn. The pilots' task was to be responsible for navigation on board the ships calling at the harbour and to take care of marking out the fairways. The pilot station was in use for 110 years and was closed in 1972.
The pilot house that stands today on Kobba Klintar was built in 1910, when the need for larger living and working spaces and, above all, a better foghorn facility arose. Today, the pilot house is a museum, and on its balcony you can see artist Juha Pykäläinen's wooden pilot looking out to sea. There are also several other permanent works of art by the same artist around the island. In addition to the pilot house, you can also visit the old pilot house and the beacon, which is a new construction, but is in the same place and has the same colour and size as the original beacon.
In summer, Kobba Café & Bar is open, where you can buy something to eat and drink while admiring the beautiful views of the sea.
