With over 15,000 objects, the Åland Museum of Photography has one of Europe's largest collections of photographic artefacts. Not just cameras, but a fantastic collection of everything related to photography and filming, such as darkroom technology, TV technology, sound and recording technology. The museum's collection includes Fridtjof Nansen's Svea camera from the North Pole expedition of 1893-1896. The museum's focus is to preserve the development of photographic technology from the time the first photograph was taken in the 1830s to today's digital developments.
The museum is divided into three sections: shop, darkroom and studio. The museum has special displays, such as Nobel Prize winner and polar explorer Fritiof Nansen's camera used on the North Pole expedition with the ship Fram in 1893-1896, older police equipment for photographing criminals and the photographic equipment belonging to bus driver Rafael Virtanen, known for his great passion for photography. Also photo equipment from Refoto.
Guided tour in Swedish.
