Up at Getabergen in northern Åland you will find the cave path, which offers its visitors a scenic hike in hilly mountain terrain with sweeping views of the North Sea.
One of Åland's beautiful nature trails, the cave path, starts at Soltuna restaurant and café, at the top of Getabergen. The approximately five kilometre long nature trail offers wonderful views, beautiful scenery, wild rock formations, historical stories, windswept martalls and exciting caves. Some of the caves along the trail have served as dwellings for people in the past, including Stefan Löfving, who was on the run from the Russians in 1715. There is also Djupviksgrottan, or the church as it is also called, where services and sermons have been held. You can read more about the history of these caves on information signs posted outside the caves. Along the trail, you'll also pass huge boulders of red rapakivi granite in every shape imaginable, one of which, the Ship's Arch, is said to have inspired at least one architect. In La Defènse in Paris there is a skyscraper with exactly the same proportions.
The area is also very popular with those who like bouldering, i.e. climbing on boulders.
Sometimes the path can be a bit demanding so it is good to set aside about 2-3 hours for the hike. It's a good idea to bring some snacks on the hike because there are many nice places where you can take a little break and enjoy something good. Download a map of the trail here
There is also a slightly shorter walk, Trollstigen, which has the same starting point but is about 1 km long and is intended for children aged 4-10 years. This trail tells about the nature and animals in Getabergen and a fairy tale about the big troll, the giant Singer, the harp, the tricky ice trolls and Vill Vallareman. The trail goes through exciting terrain with gorges and marshes.
After the hike, you can treat yourself to a bite to eat at Soltuna restaurant & café with an unbeatable view of Getabergen and the North Sea.
