The hiking trails on Åland offer varied nature, where the surroundings quickly change from deserted forests to ancient monuments, cultural buildings or miles of sea views. Choose a route to suit your taste and book accommodation along the trail.
Åland offers a wide range of hiking trails and paths that are suitable for both shorter trips and longer adventures. Most trails are easy to moderately difficult, but the variety of terrain – with cliffs, wooded areas and open landscapes – makes each hike unique.
A popular trail is the Lemlandsleden, which stretches approximately 25 kilometers from the Lemström Canal to Lumparsund. For those who want to hike further, there is the Sadelinleden, which is over 70 kilometers long and runs from Hammarland to Geta via Finström.
Åland's most magnificent trail is the St. Olof's Sea Trail. It runs through the entire Åland archipelago, from Turku Cathedral in Finland, across mainland Åland and on to Sweden. There, the trail connects to the Viking Trail, the Saint's Trail and the Stråsjö Trail, among others, with the final destination being Nidaros, today's Trondheim, in Norway.
For those who prefer shorter walks, there are plenty of smaller trails to explore. No advanced equipment is required, but waterproof shoes are recommended as some sections may be wet. Several of the trails are located in beautiful nature reserves and offer both serenity and closeness to nature.
Digital maps provide a clear overview of the trails with routes and facilities available along the way. Maps are available for Prästö, Bomarsund, Lemböte, Björkör, Jungfruskär and the Sålis Batteri, among other places.
