The Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum is housed in a building resembling a cluster of boathouses, designed by the architect Folke Wickström, and blends in well with the surrounding environment down by the fishing village of Käringsund in Eckerö.
Inside the museum, you can learn about life in the Åland archipelago, the natural environment, and the culture of hunting and fishing, both in the past and today. The permanent exhibition focuses on different types of fishing, spring bird hunting, seal hunting, and boats and engines. Don’t miss the seal guns, each of which is unique in design depending on the carpenter and blacksmith who made it, and the homemade motorised sledge, the predecessor of today’s snowmobiles. The children’s herring market is a hit with younger visitors, and you can also take part in a quiz or play the museum’s ‘Trout Route’ game.
Just outside the museum begins the geological trail, a 350-metre-long path that tells the story of Åland’s geological history. Along the trail, you’ll be taken on a journey through time spanning 2000 million years. The trail is lined with rock formations from different geological eras, passes by beautiful boathouses and finally ends in the present day on the cliffs by the sea.
The Children’s Hunting and Fishing Museum – Discover, play and learn
An exciting journey of discovery awaits our younger visitors! Here, the children can meet Örjan Taggelin the moose. The educational material is well thought-out and varied – ranging from simple games for the very youngest to tricky quizzes for the slightly older ones – ensuring the museum has something for everyone.
At the Children’s Herring Market, children get the chance to step back in time and have a go at buying herring, brown bread, apples and salt, whilst dressed in period costumes. For those who want to learn even more, there are popular quiz tours, such as ‘Rumpbingo’, where both young and old can search for the unique ‘backsides’ hidden around the museum. You can also paint your own fish!
