Åland School Museum

Åland School Museum

On Vårdö you can visit the Åland School Museum. The old school building, with school hall and teacher's residence, has been renovated and is decorated as a school environment from the turn of the century around 1900.

The school furniture in the museum is collected from all over Åland. Some of the furniture is authentic and belonged to the primary school teacher Viktor Jansson and his family. Jansson taught and lived in the school building until his death in 1895.

The idea of a school museum was first put forward in 1975 by the education and culture department of the Åland provincial government. The author Anni Blomqvist from Simskäla in Vårdö became involved in the issue at an early stage and suggested the old school on Storbacken as a suitable alternative.

In 1991, the decision was made to house the school museum in the house in Vårdö. The old school building, with school hall and teacher's residence, is today renovated and decorated as a school environment from the turn of the century around 1900.

The school museum is only open during the summer.
