Lilla Holmen, just a stone's throw away from the square in Mariehamn, is a favourite destination on hot summer days. It is one of the city's oldest and most popular destinations, with a child-friendly sandy beach, a climbing boat and spider swing for the kids, and animals such as rabbits, small birds, peacocks and chickens to greet.
As a curiosity, in the mid-30s, bathers shared the space with an aerodrome. Back then, aeroplanes landed on the water and guests went ashore on the jetty. Today, however, no aeroplanes land here and you can swim undisturbed.
